Welcome to Your Word Sort Wiki!

Variations of teacher-directed and student-centered sorts serve different instructional purposes. To ensure the words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered, these different sorts have been modeled so your child can teach you how to do them.

Types of Word Sorts

**
  • Blind Sort: Lay down a word from each category as a header. One person reads the rest of the words aloud. The other person indicates where the word goes without seeing it. Partners switch roles.
  • Writing Sort: With a partner, label the category for each column as a header. One person dictates words from the sort. The other writes the word under the correct header. Partners switch roles.
  • Speed Sort: Students should compare their speed with their own earlier speed and work toward improvement.
  • Word Hunt: Look for words in a book they have already read that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find two or three for each category.
